What is a Dental Emergency?
Not every dental issue requires immediate care, but some conditions should be treated as soon as possible to prevent more serious complications.
Common dental emergencies include:
Severe Toothache
A toothache that doesn’t improve with over-the-counter pain relief may signal an infection or decay reaching the nerve. You may notice throbbing pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, or swelling in the gums or face. Rinse with warm salt water and contact us right away, as delaying care can lead to a more serious infection or abscess.
Knocked-Out or Loose Tooth
A tooth that’s been knocked out due to trauma or accident requires immediate attention. Carefully pick up the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse gently, and try to place it back in the socket. If that’s not possible, keep the tooth moist and contact our office right away.
Broken, Chipped, or Fractured Tooth
Even a small crack can expose the inner layers of the tooth, leading to pain or infection. Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to help reduce swelling. If possible, save any broken pieces and bring them with you. In many cases, we can repair or restore the tooth with bonding, veneers, or same-day crown using CEREC technology.
Lost Filling or Crown
If a filling or crown comes loose, the exposed tooth may become sensitive and more vulnerable to decay. Keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side. Bring the restoration with your if possible. In many cases, we can reattach it or replace it in a single visit.
Dental Abscess or Swelling
An abscess is a serious infection that can cause pain, swelling, and fever. It develops when bacteria reach the tooth root or surrounding gums. If left untreated, it can spread to other areas of the body. If you notice a pimple-like bump on your gums or experience swelling near a tooth, contact us right away for prompt treatment.
Bleeding or Soft Tissue Injury
Injuries to the lips, cheeks, or gums can lead to bleeding and discomfort. Gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water and apply pressure using clean gauze. If the bleeding does not stop within 10 to 15 minutes, seek emergency care right away.
If you are unsure whether your situation is an emergency, contact 10 Day Smiles. Our caring team is here to provide the guidance and support you need.
